A sanctuary for creative writing and imagery

Comtraya! Welcome to my photo blog. I am not a photographer, art student, or design major. I get asked that a lot by strangers. I say I am not a photographer because there are so many things that define me that my ASD prevents me from committing to one area. Rather, I am a thinker, a dreamer, that uses this beautiful medium of photography to bring my dreams to fruition. I am currently shooting with a Canon Rebel t2i. I am still getting the hang of it and am excited to see how my work and skill level progress as more time passes.

–(UPDATE)– Maybe I am a photographer now that people pay me to photograph stuff, who can say? I don’t think money knows enough to determine what a person is, although it certainly can make some traits more pronounced (i.e. evil, greed, pride, generosity..) Either way, I have taken to calling myself the owner of NC Pole & Aerial Photography (NCPolePhotography.com).

I have many more interests and hobbies that occupy my time that I could talk about here but I think it would be more fun to let my images speak for me.  I chose the name CHINKandCRANNY as a reference to Ralph Waldo Emerson. I just love that guy and have found through my reading that many of the thoughts I had spent years unsuccessfully trying to explain with words, he had already written down with eloquence and simplicity. The particular passage my name comes from is taken from “Prudence,” an essay in Emerson’s first series. Speaking of the ways in which man can perceive and interact with his surroundings, Emerson writes:

There are all degrees of proficiency in knowledge of the world. It is sufficient to our present purpose to indicate three. One class live to the utility of the symbol, esteeming health and wealth a final good. Another class live above this mark to the beauty of the symbol, as the poet and artist and the naturalist and man of science. A third class live above the beauty of the symbol to the beauty of the thing signified; these are wise men. The first have common sense; the second, taste; and the third, spiritual perception. Once in a long time, a man traverses the whole scale, and sees and enjoys the symbol solidly, then also has a clear eye for its beauty, and lastly, whilst he pitches his tent on this sacred volcanic isle of nature, does not offer to build houses and barns thereon- reverencing the splendor of the God which he sees bursting through each chink and cranny.

My ultimate goal for each of my many endeavors is to gain this spiritual perception, the highest degree of knowledge. For the purposes of this blog I hope that I can not only show you the beauty of my world, but more importantly the wisdom and splendor that it innately contains as imparted by its grand creator.
